Breaking Societal Norms: Lessons from a Middle-Aged Woman's Struggle

Middle age is a time of transition and transformation for many women. It's a period where they start to question their place in society and how they fit in. This questioning leads to seeing things differently, and that's when the real growth begins. It's a time to step outside of our comfort zones, transform, and become the best versions of ourselves.

This story about my mother's colleague speaks to the struggles that many middle-aged women face. Although I didn't understand it at the time, as an adult, I have come to appreciate the lessons it taught me. I hope sharing this story will resonate with you and inspire you to advocate for those who need it most.

Growing up, I often accompanied my mother to her workplace and met many of her colleagues. One of these colleagues stood out to me. She dressed and acted differently from the others, which wasn't considered socially acceptable for a woman at that time. Despite being a mother of two boys around the same age as me, she always seemed unhappy and stressed. Her relationship with her husband lacked intimacy, and they hardly communicated, relying on their sons to pass messages and manage the household.

Back in the 1970s, society was much simpler, but there was a lack of awareness about social issues such as LGBTQ rights. People failed to recognize their rights and often faced discrimination. Thankfully, things have changed, and today, we see more people opening up about their gender identity and sexual orientation. Women and minorities have also made significant progress in terms of representation in politics and the workplace.

Although we have come a long way, many challenges still need to be addressed to achieve true equality. It's crucial to remember that transformation and growth can be uncomfortable, but it's necessary for progress. We must be willing to listen and learn from each other, respect our differences, and embrace them.

As women age, they may find themselves in a state of flux, wondering what their purpose is and how they fit into society. Some may feel unfulfilled in their roles as mothers, wives, or employees and may start to question if there's more to life. This is normal, and it's essential to take the time to explore these feelings and figure out what's next.

It's important to note that middle age is not a time to give up on your dreams. On the contrary, it's time to start pursuing them. Many successful women have started their careers or businesses in their forties or fifties. This is because they've reached a point where they're more self-assured and confident in their abilities. They have a wealth of life experience and knowledge to draw upon, which can be invaluable in pursuing new ventures.

Another aspect of middle age that can be challenging for some women is their changing bodies. Hormonal changes can cause weight gain, hot flashes, and other uncomfortable symptoms. It's important to take care of your physical health during this time. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help you feel better both physically and mentally.

Finally, it's essential to surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. This can be friends, family, or a support group of like-minded women. Having a support system can make all the difference during this transitional period.

In conclusion, middle age is a time of transformation and growth for many women. It's a time to explore new interests, pursue your dreams, and take care of your physical and mental health. It's essential to remember that this period can be uncomfortable, but it's necessary for progress. We must be willing to listen and learn from each other, respect our differences, and embrace them. If you're a middle-aged woman going through a similar experience, know that you're not alone. Share your story and support others on their journey toward authenticity.

I am a catalyst for transformation, helping women find the strength and resilience within themselves to embark on a journey of inner healing. My mission is to remind women that childbirth wounds are not their fault, and that they have the power to choose how they live their lives in the aftermath of their experiences. By healing ourselves from the inside out, we can not only improve our own well-being, but also create a positive ripple effect on those around us, including our children and families.

As the founder and CEO of Childbirth Collective, I have created a safe and nurturing space where women can find support in healing from childbirth-related traumas. Through this community, women can rediscover their sense of self and come back home to themselves. We believe in the power of letting go of limiting beliefs that no longer serve us and replacing them with expansive and supportive ones.

Together, we can create a movement of women who are empowered to heal and thrive in the aftermath of their childbirth experiences. I am honored to be a part of this journey with each and every one of you.
